About Mona

Informed by her experience as an immigrant who was often the only person of color at school, Mona Das has dedicated herself to community building and leveraging power to uplift marginalized communities. Born in India, Das identifies with the South Asian-American community. Her lived experience as a woman of color informs her passionate advocacy for racial justice, inclusion and equity.

Das has broad experience with organizational leadership, development, and management in the nonprofit, for-profit, and public sectors; she's worked in real estate and supported low-income folks in buying their first home, served on boards of nonprofit organizations focused on empowering women, and served as a Washington State Senator from 2018 to January 2023 championing racial and environmental justice, diversity and equity.

A proponent of groundbreaking environmental bills, she wrote the legislation banning plastic bags and styrofoam statewide and establishing minimum requirements for recycled content of new plastic containers. She also funded the Recycling Development Center, to conduct R & D and marketing to further markets and processing of recycled products. She has since been recognized for her environmental work with a 100% Lifetime Legislative Score from the Washington State Conservation Voters and the 2022 Environmental Legacy Award from the National Caucus of Environmental Legislators.

Senator Das is also passionate about supporting women of color running for office, and founded Opportunity PAC in service of this mission, recruiting women of color to serve on the board, and raising half a million dollars in four months. Her film, Bad Ass Women Doing Kick Ass Shit, has won 13 awards.

Last July, her commitment brought her to the international stage to speak alongside Deepak Chopra at the Global Women's Summit in London. At the time of this writing, she has just accepted the position of Head of International Expansion for Global Woman & Co., allowing her to help increase engagement of women entrepreneurs, improve access to capital, and connect leaders who are committed to building a better future for all.

Currently, Das consults with high-profile nonprofits on strategic visioning, development and fundraising, team-building, project management, and community outreach. Das is also a Democratic candidate for Washington State Commissioner of Public Lands. If elected, she’d be the first person of color in the United States to hold such a statewide position.
